Hard work, loyalty, and diligence are the cornerstones of great leaders. Nathan and Dee Parks embody these characteristics. Their leadership is worthy of all the praise they will hear this year as they celebrate their 10 anniversary of opening Moxey Birmingham. Thank you for the high level of service that you provide and the difference you make for local businesses in your community.
From Nathan Park, Executive Director & Dee Park, Director of Marketing at Moxey Birmingham:
"Both of our careers have largely been targeted toward serving local businesses. When approached about starting a trade exchange in Birmingham, we knew right away how building a local Moxey community would be a smart financial asset to small companies.
As we celebrate our 10th anniversary, we have seen huge benefits in helping our Moxey members utilize trade, save cash & obtain new customers, while growing a successful and sustainable business of our own!"
Hear what some of their clients have to say about the difference that Moxey Birmingham has made for their businesses.
Johnny Carcioppolo owner of Team Insight Plus
"What Nate and Dee have created here is nothing less than spectacular. The community continues to grow with more and more businesses to trade with. This has become my GO TO spot anytime I need to spend money to see if we have someone in the exchange that has what I am looking for. I have heard stories about other trade companies that were not very favorable but believe me that is not the case here. So glad I joined and looking forward to watching this group grow even larger. Great job Nate and Dee."
Homer Brown owner of Bumper Nets
"Moxey has been a great way to meet fellow business owners and at the same time work together to help each other pick up other non-Moxey new customers too! However, I love going to a Moxey restaurant and saving cash. That's the best!"
"Congratulations on 10 years of service! We are so fortunate to have you on our team. Your humility, generosity, and kindness is a constant source of motivation and inspiration, and your dedication and work ethics are exemplary. I wish you many more years of success. Happy work anniversary Nate and Dee!" - Aimee Supp, VP Sales & Marketing of Moxey

Baton Rouge-based community currency Moxey is partnering with Citizens Bank and Trust on a cross promotional effort that will help raise awareness among Citizens’ small business customers about Moxey and, presumably, help drive the members of the Moxey network to Citizens when they need a bank.
“As far as I know, this is the first partnership of its kind in the U.S. between a community currency and a traditional bank,” Moxey founder Charlie Davis says. “It really speaks to the growing acceptance and recognition of community currencies.”
Davis launched Moxey in 2017, and its growth has been slow but steady. The network currently has around 3,500 mostly Louisiana members, with a small presence in Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee.
Earlier this year, Moxey closed on a $650,000 round of seed capital, which funded the development of a new app that has made Moxey easier to use and also helped fuel recent growth, Davis says.
Community currencies like Moxey are different from crypto currencies such as Bitcoin. The latter is a virtual or digital currency that is encrypted using a special technology.
A community currency, though also virtual, is not intended to compete with U.S currency, but rather to supplement it through a membership network system rooted in the concept of a barter economy.
Members that accept Moxey dollars for their goods or services are then able to spend their Moxey money with other members of the network, which both frees up cash flow and creates a built-in customer base.
Moxey also does not compete with traditional banks but can complement them, which is why the Plaquemine-based Citizens is partnering with it on the promotion.
“Citizens Bank and Trust feels that Moxey offers another tool for local businesses that is complementary with local banking,” Citizens manager Roland Gaudet says in a statement. “We look forward to the partnership with Moxey and continuing to increase our presence in West Baton Rouge, Pointe Coupee and Iberville parishes.”

Here is to many more Rick!
50 years ago, President Nixon ended the Bretton Woods agreement and dramatically changed the future of the American economy.
The country removed the last remaining safety line that tethered the US dollar to external accountability and told themselves that this time it would be different. This time the dollar would soar forever and never fall back to earth. This time Icarus’s wings would be fireproof.
The event has become a historical asterisk in history books and won’t get much notice outside of think tanks and financial publications. It’s unlikely to even earn a google doodle. Yet few events over the past century have been as impactful as Nixon’s fateful decision half a century ago.
Today rampant inflation undergirds social unrest and exacerbates the gap between the rich and the poor. But it has become so common that we almost don’t notice anymore.
Below is a short video from his speech on August 15th 1971 announcing the decision. And here is a link to Nixon Broke With Gold 50 Years Ago. What Comes Next?, an article by John Authers from Bloomberg analyzing the event and its historical impact.
On May 1st we closed our seed round and began the next phase of Moxey. Since that moment we’ve been moving as fast as possible to turn Moxey into the largest and most successful trade exchange network on the planet.

Moxey Announces Appointment of Corey Tisdale, Co-founder of BBQ Guys, to Board of Advisors
Moxey’s Announcement April 6, 2021 of Successful Equity Campaign Exceeding $415,000 Ignites New Investors Across Southeast United States Interested in Helping Local Businesses
Baton Rouge, LA – Corey Tisdale, co-founder of BBQGuys, has been appointed to the Moxey Board of Advisors. The announcement was made on Tuesday, April 6, 2021 by Moxey President and CEO Charlie Davis with co-founders and Executive Board Members Chip Davis and Warren Sager.
Moxey is a community of small businesses that help each other by providing two core solutions for local business owners: access to an interest-free line of credit and revenue from new customers from within the Moxey community.
Louisiana native and LSU grad, Corey Tisdale has earned a well-respected reputation as a thought leader in digital market, e-commerce, and technology. As a co-founder of BBQGuys, Tisdale served in a variety of key roles as former COO, CTO, and CEO. He has 21 years of experience in e-commerce and technology. BBQGuys, an online retailer of barbecue grills, smokers, and outdoor kitchen equipment (No. 345 in the 2020 Digital Commerce 360 Top 1000), and Blaze Outdoor Products, the fastest growing brand of barbecue grills in the country, were acquired by Brand Velocity Partners (BVP) in August of 2020.
Over the last 21 years, BBQGuys and sister company Blaze Outdoor Grills were repeatedly listed in the annual Inc. Magazine Top 5000 U.S. businesses and in the top 10 of Best Places to Work by the Baton Rouge Business Report.
Tisdale’s appointment to the Moxey Board of Advisors is valuable for future initiatives for growth due to his in-depth experience in e-commerce, technology, marketing, angel investing, management and strategic planning, and financial modeling.
“With the network that Moxey has in place regionally and their successful systematic approach to connecting companies and their owners with capital and resources in a deliberate and collaborative way, the structure is there to grow exponentially. This will help small business owners stabilize and scale up as they are able with more customers and inventories that are making a profit, not liabilities,” said Tisdale.
“Corey’s ability to spot opportunities and plan for the unexpected is incredible” said President and CEO Charlie Davis. “We’re grateful that Corey has identified Moxey’s massive potential and look forward to working with him.”
Moxey VP of Operations, Warren Sager said “Corey brings so much knowledge and practical advice to our team. As we grow our business and scale the best business network we need as many smart capable people that truly understand what we are doing and are passionate about our mission to help small businesses. We are so excited to have Corey as one of our advisors.”
Aimee Supp, Moxey VP of Sales & Marketing added, “Corey’s personal business and investment initiatives reflect his passion for driving innovative, high reward and high benefit projects. He is a self proclaimed “helpful guy” and we see the new phase of his life as evidence of that very thing. He spends his time among multiple channels offering his expertise as a consultant, his many philanthropic endeavors and Entrepreneur in Residence at The Idea Village. As Moxey gains traction in up-and-coming markets, Corey’s addition to the board comes at no better time.”

Today, we are dancing in the streets like it is Mardi Gras with this update! In the 10 days since we have launched our Wefunder campaign, we have over 200 investors who have invested over $364K!
That is a lot to celebrate! Especially when, deep down, we know that your investment allows us the opportunity to serve more entrepreneurs and business owners in the communities that we currently serve and the ones that wehave our sights set on.
Here are some of the reasons our investors said they backed us!
Phyllis Greenberg I've been a Moxey member for 4 or 5 years now. I see the value of Moxey dollars to my business and its continued growth as well as to the economy. When I'm about to spend money I always investigate if I can use my Moxey dollars as payment before I resort to using my actual cash.
Mike Calhoun As a member of the Moxey community for 5 years, I have seen it grow. The time for digital currency has arrived, and this model has a firm backing with the businesses that participate. Bitcoin only has value because of speculation. Moxey has value because it represents the businesses that are members.
Amellie Photography & Video I have been using Moxey for the last 5 years and Moxey has been a great source of additional business to my companies. The Moxey system has been proven, improved, and streamlined over the years with a huge network of profitable local businesses. This is definitely worth investing in.

Aaron Melendez Out of an immense amount of respect, trust and gratitude for Warren Sager. This doesn’t even crack the surface of how much I owe him for all the guidance and mentorship.
Regina Lines First of all, I am a huge supporter of small businesses and I believe they provide a positive impact not only in our economy but also in our world and how we relate to one another. Second, I have known Aimee Supp for over 20 years, and I am constantly inspired by the passion, determination and care she pours into helping local economies and entrepreneurs. I was lucky enough to follow her around Baton Rouge and NOLA as she checked in on her customers and her knowledge, not only about their business, but also them as individuals was aspirational and endearing. The kindness and attention she gave each of them was reflected back to her. I know she wholeheartedly believes in the service Moxey provides and as long as she is involved in a business, you can count me in as well!
Bekka Supp Nepotism aside, I heartily believe that an investment in Moxey is an investment in small business communities across the US. I want to give those small business owners every opportunity to succeed and have seen what the right kind of advocacy and symbiotic relationship building can do because of my sister, Aimee Supp. She already brings a lot of heart to Baton Rouge and New Orleans and I am positively thrilled and anxious to see it grow into markets across America. It's not very often you see women in leadership positions hustle as much as Aimee, but I know she works tirelessly because she wants all small businesses, regardless of location/region, to succeed as much as Moxey does. I hope this helps elevate Moxey's game! Best of luck!
Richard Bentley I am a cyber security professional with a passion for ease of secure Fintech. I had a good look at Moxey when I interviewed with them about a year ago. They chose to go in a different direction but that didn't change my admiration for what they have done.

Houmphanh Meuanghane My family has been small business owners for the past 25 years. I can definitely relate to the challenges that small businesses face in terms of financing and growing customer base. Unfortunately, we did not have such an offering during that time, so we went to our family for financial needs. This option is not available to everyone and we were fortunate to have that. Now that we are able to become small time investors, we want to invest in businesses we believed in and this is one such business that would have greatly benefited us when we started off. Thank you for providing these types of services to those in need. Wish you and your team prosperity.
Timothy Baxter I'm keen on the concept of alternative means of exchange and by-passing the central banking cartel, as well as keeping our middle class from perishing by supporting smaller local businesses. Moxey seems to check these boxes so I would like to support it.

THANK YOU again for believing in us!
History shows that while anyone from Chuck E. Cheese to the Weimar Republic can issue money, maintaining the stability and purchasing power is incredibly challenging.
Moxey credits are used to facilitate barter transactions between our members. These credits are the glue that holds the network together and ensures that a plumber in one city can visit a restaurant in another, or purchase consulting services from a different state.
Maintaining the value of Moxey credits is critical to the long-term success of our organization.
We've designed two innovative concepts to do this:
- Dynamic Reserves
- Proof of Value
Proof of Value and Dynamic reservesare monetary theories with the goal of combining the economic dynamism of fractional reserves with the inflation stopping power of hard money. Together they provide a system for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the Moxey credit network.
Stay tuned for the unveiling of both concepts.
"We need more customers to make this business as successful as we want it to be!" What small business owner hasn't had that thought? Then the advertising ideas begin to run through the heads of everyone involved.
- Let's update our web page
- Let's do paid promotion on social media
- Let's join the chamber and network
- Let's buy radio ads
- Let's rent a billboard
- Let's print flyers for all over town!
Then the bookkeeper says, "there's just enough money in the bank to make payroll and pay yourself this week". RUT ROH Shaggy!
As a means of gaining new customers and keeping more cash in the bank nothing beats bartering your business' goods or services. Even better, almost every business can afford to barter.
Think about the excess capacity within the overhead of every business.
- Could the restaurant have filled four more tables at Thursday lunch?
- Could the attorney, accountant or IT service have billed more customers last week?
- At the retail store for everything babies, could the salespeople handle more customers Monday?
- Did the dentist or chiropractor have available time for more patients?
- Did the tangerine farmer have leftover crop that spoiled?
The answer in every case and in the case of your business (because you're reading this article!) is yes, more customers please! Now remember that without more customers all the excess capacity in every business is worth ZERO.
So you're convinced, every business wants more customers, but is bartering going to help? Most businesses do some sort of paid advertising, as discussed above, to attract more customers, HOPEFULLY. That can get expensive and have unknown success.
Bartering opens a means of attracting more customers only for the cost of the trade, no trade no cost. Stay with me, we've already established the excess capacity in a business is worth zero. Then, logically if a business can replace zero value with actual value, it should do so by all means.
Let's call this new value barter dollars or B$. In a B2B barter or trade exchange network the members use their B$ to replace cash expenses. The trade exchange lawyer at a table that paid the restaurant 200B$ yesterday at dinner turns into the restaurant calling out the trade plumber to clear a drain and pays him 175B$,all instead of cash. The only cost to the lawyer at the table, the restaurant and the plumber, all likely new customers, would be the trade exchange commission.
A really great example of such a system was covered by CBS Sunday Morning a couple of years ago, take a visit to the Italian island of Sardinia, here is the link to the interview .
Admittedly, not every business is a good candidate for bartering, realtors, bankers, financial planners and stock brokerages cannot barter under any normal scenario. Also, businesses like gas stations that have extremely thin margins and high demand for cash inventory would have difficulty being in a barter network.
These are the exceptions, the vast majority of businesses can gain real value and grow their business by joining a business trade exchange, I can almost guarantee there's one in close proximity to you, big city or small town.
Here's how I would evaluate any trade exchange. First, keep in mind the exchange is a closed banking system using a community currency and forget about "crypto currency" like bitcoin, it is not that at all. The exchange controls the community currency completely and all the credit and transactions within the exchange are done under a system of trust in each other. Any exchange is only as good as it's members and those in charge of administering it.
- Ask direct questions of the person recruiting you to join.
- What are the commissions charged and do you pay when you receive B$ or spend or both?
- How tightly does the exchange regulate member businesses making sure there's no price gouging?
- Does the exchange set credit limits and accumulation limits on its members?
- Does the exchange use real time software and allow members to monitor their accounts 24/7?
- Were their many mistakes on last year's 1099Bs the exchange issued.
Oh no, that idea about getting new tax free customers just blew up (awwww), you won't be able to skip out on the tax man. The I.R.S. recognizes trade exchange dollars as the equivalent of US dollars and requires participating businesses to be issued a 1099B.You won't mind though, once you've joined the right exchangeyour business will start to thrive. That P&L will look great, you'll have more new customers and more cash in the bank.
Now let me ask, did I inform you about the most underutilized method of attracting new customers? I'm happy to answer questions, email me. Happy Bartering!

What is the value of that one empty table in your restaurant?
The restaurant industry is one of the most competitive industries in the marketplace. It is an industry that can benefit from leveraging what they have, empty tables, to get what they need in every moment.
As a Moxey member, restaurants can add the proven strategy and the powerful marketing tools that Moxey provides to bring the restaurant new customers. These customers will be filling empty tables, allowing the restaurant owners the opportunity to maximize their resources and capture a larger audience.
One empty table in a restaurant doesn’t “cost” anything more beyond overhead if there isn’t anyone to fill it. However, the missed opportunity that empty table leaves every day adds up to a lot of missed revenue over time.
Let’s dive into that a little more: A restaurant is open all year for dinner and can turn over that table at least 2 times in an evening.
Their average ticket for that table for 2 is $50.00 with that table being sat at least two times per evening. Total average revenue for that table per night is $100.00. The restaurant is open 6 nights per week $600.00. That ONE empty table is a missed opportunity of $31,200 in revenue.
What could you do with an extra 10,000-30,000 in additional revenue?Upgrade your menus?Bonus your staff? Advertise your business? Expand your catering business?
The possibilities are endless! Instead of spending cash on your common overhead expenses such as advertising & marketing, printing, uniforms, building & property maintenance, and employee incentives you can now utilize your new Moxey revenue and use your saved cash to upgrade, expansion, employee benefits and bonuses, etc…. or to put in your pocket!
Many business owners incentivize their employees with Moxey Gift Cards and restaurants are one of the top places where they redeem them - creating another stream of new customers connected to more people that will learn about your business and likely share their experience with their friends.
Our system may not be able to fill that table every evening (many days it will fill many more!), but we have a proven track record with many great success stories.

We are in full focus of the holiday season here at Moxey and while the day after Thanksgiving for most involves the Black Friday Sales, we want to remind everyone that Saturday is to remember small businesses when working on your shopping lists! It offers an opportunity to enjoy a stroll down your town’s Main Street one day after the hustle bustle of Black Friday.
Small Business Saturday, November 30th, is a day set aside to show support for local small businesses. The day, created in 2010 by American Express, has become a popular way for members of the community to support and celebrate local small businesses. A survey released in 2018 by American Express and NFIB, found that about 67 cents of every dollar spent at a small business remains in the community.
Most of the money you spend at a local small business stays in your community. The small business owners hire your friends and neighbors, and often support local teams and charitable causes.
Small Businesses are pulse of Moxey and the local communities we support. Our purpose is to help small businesses in the United States, currently focusing on the local businesses in the Moxey communities. We love Small Business Saturday and our ethos takes that support one step further.
Moxey exposes local business owners to high value, motivated customers that are committed to the Shop Local Movement. Every dollar that is spent within our community, stays in the local community. In 2019, we have supported over 4000 local businesses in Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Alabama, generating over 21M in business for those businesses. Our very first community, PartnersOne in Baton Rouge, will be celebrating their 20 anniversary next year. Local Business is in our DNA. We are featuring our Moxey Gift Guide for the first time this holiday season here. We will be adding more local businesses to the gift guide as a further way to promote Small Businesses.

Moxey now has more than 4,000 members in 15 Southeastern locations.
Businesses that are able to survive the COVID-19 pandemic will need a new and more nimble way to operate going forward. Warren Sager ’91 and his partners at Moxey believe their national network of barter communities is the solution.
A forward-thinking entrepreneur, Sager connected with a local barter community in Baton Rouge, LA, nearly 20 years ago. Not only did he see benefit to participating in the network, he saw its growth potential and became an investor.
Today, Moxey is active in 15 Southeastern communities with more than 4,000 members. As of last year, Moxey had processed more than $100 million in transactional volume, making money through commissions.
“This is only the tip of the iceberg,” Sager says. “Moxey might be the most significant new tool to emerge in the small-business community in our lifetime.”
Moxey does two main things for local businesses: helps get new, high-value, recurring customers and improves their valuable cash flow.
Here’s how it works: When Business A joins the Moxey network, it instantly receives an interest-free credit line. “Day-one buying power has always been a selling point in our communities, but it has never been more valuable than it is now,” Sager says.
If Business A, in its first Moxey transaction, purchases $500 of goods and services from another member of the network, the account balance becomes –$500, with the expectation that Business A will make future sales to cross the break-even point and hopefully be on the plus side. The network’s managers and brokers leap into action, designing ads and promoting Business A to others in the network. This helps generate sales that move Business A’s Moxey account balance into the black.
“Moxey is responsive to the needs of the small-business community,” Sager says. “You can use it on anything: printers, restaurants, mechanics, graphic designers, painters, you name it. What’s awesome is that once businesses join Moxey, they love it and they always try to spend their Moxey dollars over cash.”
Businesses can also use Moxey to work together and give each other supplies and services they need to ensure survival when cash is tight.
“There was certainly a time when business owners were leery of signing up to trade away their products,” Sager says. “The concept was foreign and the learning curve was long. That time has certainly passed. Business owners today must be adventurous and agile.”

It seems fitting that a trade system prevalent in the middle ages could be a timely solution for cash strapped business during this modern-day plague. The worldwide Covid-19 pandemic is forcing business owners to think outside of the box to save cash.
The problem with cash is that it’s limited. The only way to get more is to get more customers to spend more cash to get more business. Spending the cash or credit needed to acquire new customers may be hard to justify during times like these when some businesses are struggling to pay employees or stay open.
When cashflow is down, companies have to get creative.
Early in 2020, as businesses began to close due to Covid, Shark Tank Millionaire Damon John asked his employees “to put on their entrepreneur hats” and “change the way that we do business”. He shared their ideasduring aFox Business interviewby Blair Shiff.
The entrepreneur considers a bartering effort to be mutually beneficial since it helps small businesses maintain their revenue flow.
For barter to work, the business owners need to know each other, each owner must have a need for what the other one wants and the money needs to work out.
If you own a gourmet hot dog restaurant and your child needs braces, it is unlikely that you will find a dentist who is willing to accept $5,000 worth of gift certificates for hot dogs.
Typically a direct barter transaction leaves one party with a loss - if it happens at all. Direct barter can be clunky, but it doesn't have to be.The power of barter is still there... using what you have to get what you need without spending cash.
Moxey bridges all the points of a barter transaction so it powerfully makes sense for all parties and everyone wins. Moxey Dollars are used amongst all business owners to measure the value of the transaction.
For 20 years, Moxey communities inLouisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Alabama have been using amplified barter to help local businesses get more customers and increase their cashflow.

Barter is likely one of the largest and most fragmented industries in the world. It can be found in every community on the planet and yet remains poorly defined and radically misunderstood.
In this article I’ll touch on some of the most common types of barter and related activities.
The word barter can refer to:
- Directly trading items (products or services) where no money of any kind changes hands (OR)
- Indirectly trading items (products or services) using credits to keep track of the transactions
The word barter can also refer to:
- Two individuals simultaneously swapping a small item (OR)
- Thousands of people continually buying and selling unlimited items via an organized network for decades.
Below is a quick overview and explanation of several different types of barter transactions.
Direct Barter – two or more parties directly trading items or services. An example would include a dentist providing braces for a lawyer who then provides legal counsel to the dentist. These are often called direct trades, they happen all the time, and are nearly impossible to track.
These types of trades benefit both parties but are very difficult to manage at scale because they are challenging to keep track of, hard for both sides to quantify fairly, and because of the classic problem economists like to call “the double coincidence of wants”. The transaction is unlikely to be reported as income on either side’s tax return.
The remaining versions of barter generally use some type of a credit-based system to keep track of balances and transactions between the participants. This allows for continuous bartering amongst an unlimited number of participants via the simple tracking of debits and credits inside of a closed loop.
These systems are sometimes classified as Mutual Credit Networks or Complementary Currencies. (Both of these terms are very academic in nature, and even amongst hyper-active barter participants, I almost never encounter anyone who is familiar with either term.)
Managed Barter or Retail Barter –conducted between small businesses via a locally organized Trade Exchange. The Trade Exchange is considered a third-party record keeper and their job is to allocate and create credit, to recruit new members, and to manage the overall health of the network. They can be small networks with part-time staff or corporations with large offices in multiple countries.
Since 1982’s TEFRA legislation these organizations and their business model has been blessed by the US government. The IRS requires that all participants in a barter network get a 1099-B and report their income on their tax returns.
Examples include Trust Acadiana, BizX and The Wir Bank.
Corporate Barter – generally means barter conducted by large companies and can be either direct barter or bartering with credits. This term applies to large transactions conducted by Trade Exchanges on a regular basis and the occasional deal amongst several companies with a broker who is earning a commission (profit or fee based) as goods and services change hands.
One of the most common examples would be radio stations trading advertising spots in exchange for products and services that they give away on the air or used internally.
My favorite example is from the early 1990s when Pepsi traded over 3 billion dollars worth of Pepsi-Cola for vodka and Soviet ocean freighters.
Countertrade – is itself a confusing term (and might be the subject of a future post) but a common definition is a large international transaction where barter (direct or via credits) is a component of the deal. To be considered countertrade the transaction must be relatively large and generally cross at least one international border.
Local Exchange Trading Systems (LETS) – means a community of individuals and/or very small businesses who are bartering with each other using credits. The value of each credit can be pegged to the official currency of the region or based upon time. While Trade Exchanges generally have members who are small businesses, a LETS network will often have members who are individuals.
Time Banks or Time Dollars – while most barter networks function with a credit system whose value is pegged to the official fiat currency of the country, time dollars are pegged to time. Each credit might be worth one hour of a person’s labor as opposed to one dollar toward their hourly rate.
This creates a potential scenario where an hour of a professional’s time such as a lawyer who charges $750/hour could be traded equally for an hour of a non-professional’s time who might earn $15/hour in the normal economy.
Examples include Ithaca Hours.
Community Currencies & Local Currencies – these systems are also considered Complementary Currencies, but instead of earning credits via a barter transaction or created via a loan, they are often purchased using the official currency of the region.
Examples include BerkShares.
Moxey – Moxey is a growing network of Trade Exchanges (conducting retail and corporate barter) all using Moxey dollars as the credit network to track transactions. Moxey is using propriety technology and unique monetary principles to build the most reliable trade dollar on the planet. Contact us to find out how you can launch a Moxey Community in your city.

Businesses are struggling during this economic crisis. Production capacities are decreasing, and current stock is not selling, causing liquidity problems for local companies. Throughout history, barter has been a very important tool to help people feed their families and ensure the survival of their business during economic downturns.
Mesopotamia tribes were likely the starting point of the bartering system back in 6000 BC. They utilized the bartering system to get the food, weapons, and spices they needed. Roman soldiers even bartered their services for the empire in exchange for payment in salt.
Numerous passages in the bible mention people trading things like livestock in exchange for food or other services.
Genesis 47:17
“So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them food in exchange for the horses and the flocks and the herds and the donkeys, and he fed them with food in exchange for all their livestock that year.”
Barter didn’t end in ancient times. During The Great Depression, the agricultural economy got so bad that many farmers were forced to trade their crops and other goods to their creditors. Many people were laid off, causing them to barter their services directly with one another rather than going through the intermediate step of converting the goods and services into a cash value.
If the 1930’s is too far back for you, and you believe something like that could never happen in today’s society, it has. In 1985, the Wall Street Journal reported that the rate of price increase in Bolivia over a six-month period was almost thirty-eight thousand percent. Imagine now that you went to the vending machine to buy a soda in January and paid one dollar. When you went back in June to buy the same soda in this hyperinflationary environment, you were paying three hundred and eighty-one dollars. People would revert from trading in money to trading in actual real goods and services; that is, bartering in order to avoid carrying around money that would rapidly lose value.
The 2008 economic crisis in the USA was the most recent example of bartering gaining momentum. Ron Whitney, executive director of the International Reciprocal Trade Association, said members of his association – which consists of companies that facilitate bartering trades – reported a 15 percent to 35 percent increase in bartering transactions in 2008 compared with 2007.
Bob Meyer, the publisher of the BarterNews trade magazine, said large bartering exchanges such as International Monetary Systems are reporting sales growth of at least 25 percent in the last quarter of 2008 compared with the third quarter. ``When recession looms, barter booms,″ said Meyer.
Over the past 20 years, Moxey’s core purpose has always been to help small businesses improve cash flow and gain new customers. As history goes to show, monetary crises fuel the revival of barter systems. If our economy goes into recession due to the COVID-19 pandemic, bartering will once again be an essential tool to help businesses survive and allow people to feed their families. There has never been a better time to consider joining your local Moxey community; a trade exchange is always a great resource for businesses. Moxey participated in several conference calls today with the US Chamber of Commerce, the SBA, the Whitehouse and other government leaders in regards to the ongoing economic crisis caused by the Coronavirus. We have over 4,000 business members and we're doing everything that we can to help you stay informed. This is a recap of what we learned today:
- The administration is making it easier for impacted small businesses to apply for an economic injury disaster loan of up to $2 million.
- They have already signed disaster declarations as of today, 45 states and Puerto Rico, and anticipate that declarations will be made for all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the territory by Monday.
- They have changed the policy so that payments are deferred up to one year on economic injury loans and can be deferred up to six months on our standard SBA loan portfolio.
- Additionally, the Small Business Administration has $18 billion available in lending authority for seven eight loans. And they are making it easier and faster to get them.
- Tax Day was moved from April 15 to July 15 giving businesses and individuals the extra time to file and pay without interest in penalties. You can still file business or individual taxes to receive your refund, if applicable, sooner.
- Signed into law, critical support for American workers, families, and small businesses. Providing paid sick leave and family medical leave to those affected by the virus, at no cost and will be fully reimbursed. Those who are ill themselves or caring for sick family members are reminded to please stay home.
- Dollar for dollar reimbursement for small businesses through tax credits. The administration will be using the Congress’ authority to give exemptions for small businesses in certain circumstances that threaten the business' life and viability. They will also be seeking public input and providing more public guidance on the law.
- The Treasury will allow Payroll Tax Withholding in the rare event that such withholdings are insufficient. Small businesses with 50 employees or less will be exempt from certain requirements if that business is in jeopardy.
- Taking care of the businesses we already serve by giving flexibility and training to our contractors to manage their small business portfolios during this very difficult time. The administration is continually looking at more ways to simplify processes and bureaucratic barriers to get capital in the hands of all customers.
- All businesses can apply for loans directly http://www.sba.gov/disaster
- They are working with Congress to give direct payments to hard working Americans and relief to affected industries and to provide $300 billion directly to our country's small businesses.
- They have put in place a new overtime rule that made more workers eligible for overtime.
- They set the exemption level at a reasonable amount of $35,000 and capping at $47,000 as the last level.
- This year they put out a rule on joint employment for greater clarity on a minimum wage and overtime requirements that will decrease compliance costs and legal fees, and to make it easier for small businesses to enter franchise relationships.
- They have an enormous fund developing for guaranteed loans to small businesses, so they can overcome the next upcoming weeks.
President Trump assured us that the administration is taking the most aggressive actions possible to deliver immediate relief to businesses and workers. Overall, the sentiment of the call was positive and encouraging. All of the resources of the US government are being mobilized to stabilize the economy with an emphasis on the 30 million small businesses who are the pride of our country and the backbone of our communities. These companies employ 59 million Americans, nearly half of our workforce.
NOTE: This is a very fluid situation and we should anticipate that some of the details above could be changed in the coming days and weeks.
This is a note that we sent to Moxey ambassadors and Moxey community leaders to better prepare them for potential impacts from the coronavirus.
Yesterday Sequoia Capital called the coronavirus a black swan event.
They noted, that while some businesses would benefit, most are at risk for a drop in business activity, supply chain disruptions, and curtailment of travel and canceled meetings. In many parts of the world, we are already seeing the impact of this in the news.
The Moxey network is uniquely positioned to help businesses survive during an economic downturn and the more prepared we are, the more people we can help.
Perhaps one of the most impactful things that we can do is to help our members improve their cash flow before it becomes an emergency. We can directly improve their cash flow by 1) increasing their credit line and 2) helping them to switch existing cash expenses to Moxey expenses.
The more Moxey dollars that they spend, the more cash they can save for other critical needs as the country and the economy work through any effects from the coronavirus.
It’s not very well known, but Irving Fisher, the most famous American economist of the last century, proposed a nationwide network of community exchanges (much like the Moxey network today) during the height of the Great Depression to help small businesses sustain themselves. We have the infrastructure to do just that.
Industries such as hospitality and tourism could be impacted first, but any large and lasting economic recession is likely to spread.
While large businesses will benefit from Fed rate cuts, most small business won’t. SMEs are the companies that will need capital the most and the ones who will find it the hardest to get.
Members who own hotels, restaurants or transportation companies, as well as those that service them, might benefit by starting now to conserve cash by switching more expenses to their Moxey accounts.
We must be prepared to help our existing members as well as to approve new membership applications as quickly as possible.
Many companies are already relying on Moxey to pay for everyday business needs from accounting and janitorial services to healthcare and construction.
Moxey’s purpose is to help people thrive in business and in life. We can help our members thrive in this environment and rise the tide for our entire community.
[BATON ROUGE] American Printing has been a tradition in the wedding and social printing industry in Baton Rouge for 35 years. Bart & Tracey Zimmerman joined the Moxey Community in 2005 with PartnersOne in Baton Rouge.
On any given day, the American Printing team is busy taking care of a bride’s wedding invitations, save the date announcements or a number of print jobs for their business clients. However, they always have the availability to take a few more customers.
By being a member of PartnersOne, the Zimmermans sold print jobs, that would have otherwise go unused for Moxey dollars, which they can then spend on accounting services, building maintenance or a number of business expenses.
The Zimmermans have found creative ways to use their Moxey dollars by staying in touch with the PartnersOne team. In 2015, The Zimmermans purchased a 1,800-square-foot building that the needed to be renovated before they moved in. Initially they were going to go through a traditional bank to borrow cash for the work. Instead, they approached PartnersOne. “We were doing a $45,000 build out and we gave PartnersOne an itemized list of what we needed,” Bart said. “We used Moxey dollars to pay for the interior/exterior painting, electrical upgrades, new cabinets and floors and so much more.”
The Zimmermans were able to pay back this line of credit by allowing PartnersOne members to purchase printing with Moxey dollars. Although that was a lot of printing to sell, Bart & Tracey barely felt the impact.
“We were able to focus on moving into our new office and taking care of our customers. If we took that loan through the bank, we would have needed to focus on how we were going to make monthly cash payments WITH interest.” Tracey explains. “Instead, we took care of the customers that PartnersOne sent us paying with Moxey dollars and had the line of credit they gave us paid off in 8 months.”
In the Moxey community, we say:
“Keep doing what you do best - taking care of your customers.”
“We will do what we do best - send you new customers to take care of.”
We are grateful that American Printing has been a member of the Moxey Community since 2005. Both Bart & Tracey serve as board members of 2 Moxey communities. PartnersOne in Baton Rouge and Jambalaya Trade Exchange (JTEX) in Ascension Parish.
Bart and Tracey Zimmerman have an expert staff at American Printing Center that can help with any questions that you may have. From design to etiquette, they are here to serve you.

[Baton Rouge] Daryl Hardwick was one of the founding members of PartnersOne - where the first Moxey community began. Daryl’s Automotive joined the Moxey community in 2001 and has been a valued member ever since
The first benefit that he immediately saw was the new customers that came through his door because he accepted Moxey dollars as payment. “Occasionally, I would have an empty bay just sitting there and my team waiting around for work to come in.” explained Daryl. “With Moxey, I have gotten a new stream of customers. Even better, I am not losing out on that empty bay sitting there. I would have been paying for my business to be open but missing out on business without that customer coming through my door.”
As business came in, Daryl used the Moxey dollars he earned to get a brand new website, a security system installed and all his printing for his business. When Daryl began to pay himself in Moxey dollars, he spent his Moxey on regular landscaping of his home, regular pest control services and paid for his mother’s hearing aid.
But, as Daryl will tell you, the second benefit from joining the Moxey community came from the impact that Moxey has on his employees. It started with offering coffee and water services provided for his staff. Then catering lunch for his team from time to time. When Moxey introduced their Employee Incentive program, Daryl took a rather generous approach of increasing his employee bonuses and paying it with Moxey dollars.
“When you spend Moxey Dollars, you can be more creative.” explained Daryl “saving cash helped me grow my business. With the Employee Incentive Program, I can offer my employees the ability to get their kids braces or take their dog to the vet. There are business owners within Moxey who send their employees to me to get their car fixed as part of their Employee Incentive Program.”
He went on to explain that this has provided him the ability to retain his employees and show them how grateful he is for all of their hard work.
The philosophy at Daryl’s Automotive is as straightforward as their repair work. They don’t use gimmicks or cheap specials to lure customers. They believe in long-term relationships with their clients built on good, honest work completed for a fair price in a timely manner.
